Historic Route 66 Map

Michael Karl Witzel was specially commissioned to create this one-of-a-kind map for the book Legendary 66: A Journey Through Time Along America’s Mother Road. Meandering though eight states and three time zones, this whimsical representation of Highway 66 is a visual delight. It’s all here, including famous restaurants, trading posts, motels, tourist attractions, familiar monuments, and other points of interest that are found along this cross-country journey through the heart of America.

Based on a 1936 Route 66 highway alignment derived from a vintage Shell Oil company road map, The Historical Main Street of America map features more than one-dozen interesting “factoids” that celebrate the culture of the road and road building itself. Get the inside scoop on how the once ubiquitous Burma Shave signs began, where the McDonald brothers opened their first drive-in, which oil company printed the first service station road map in America, and much more.

Discover little-known facts about the history of road construction, too—including how John Louden McAdam’s innovative road design laid the groundwork for today’s modern highways, where the first stretch of concrete street was poured in America, and how a man named Arthur Hale made roadway intersections safe with the Clover Leaf. Route 66: The Historic Main Street of America Map is a unique memento for Route 66 collectors and aficionados of the American road alike.
